No one remembers where the Silent come from. For all intents and purposes, they appear to be completely normal human beings save for one unusual trait – the silent are completely incapable of communicating with other human beings. The silent cannot speak – not a single world – and any attempts they make to communicate via writing seems to cause them to fall into fits and seizures. Is is commonly held that they are cursed in some capacity but the truth of this is unknown.
They are a much maligned and mistreated underclass relegated to the role of silent slaves and servants who are incapable of betraying their masters. And, as the trait breeds true over fifty percent of the time, the Silent are forbidden from forming most meaningful relationships outside of their own kind – for fear of their strange condition spreading to overtake entire populations.
The Silent do make use of a sign and expression based language among their own kind, however. They rarely, if ever, teach this mode of communication to outsiders for reasons which are unclear.
Those of Silent ancestry benefit from the following ethnic modifiers.
Silent Ethnic Traits
- +1 bonus to Circles
- Silence – You can’t vocalize in any capacity and are incapable of writing – your body seizing up when you attempt to do so. Strangely enough, you can extend this silence to others when you wish it. You may spend 1 Fate to make one person you are touching completely incapable of communicating via vocalization or writing until the end of the scene. This effect does not require continuous contact – merely a touch to activate. The Silent rarely let on that they can use this ability for fear of repercussions.
- Unobtrusive Presence – You are incredibly adept at moving in stealth and silence. You gain a +2 bonus to Stealth skill checks made to move without making noise.
